Welcome to The School of Education and Social Sciences

The School of Education and Social Sciences (SoESS) comprises of two departments – The Department of Teacher Education and the Department of Social Sciences. The Ag. Dean, Dr. Susan Ouko, would like to see the school work towards the university’s mission by endeavoring to provide learners an opportunity to create, preserve and disseminate knowledge and skills for service to humanity. In each department you will find service that is characterized by integrity and accountability. The school is staffed with diverse personnel in terms of experience and expertise in both full time and part time capacities. The Department of Teacher Education offers Bed (Arts) and Bed (Early Childhood). The Bed (science) begins in the intake of 2021/2022 academic year. Currently the department of Teacher Education is headed by Ms. Abisaki Oloo. Teaching learning activities include collaborations on development of teaching projects, research and interaction with the community. Mr. Augustine Tioko Logiron currently heads the department of social sciences, which offers courses in Development studies, Administration and Social work at Masters, Degree, Diploma and Certificate levels. In this area students are nurtured to  contribute to the development and well-being of individuals, groups as well as social organizations. The school also offers a variety of short courses in diverse areas. The SoESS welcome internships, partnership with other universities, and post-doctoral researchers.Welcome to The School of Education and Social Sciences  of Turkana University and to the cradle of mankind.

MEMBERS PROFILE

  1. The Dean – School of Education and Social Sciences

Dr. Ouko holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD)  in Mathematics Education from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. She is an alumnus of Moi University where she obtained a Master of Philosophy in Educational Communication and Technology specializing in Mathematics Education. For her Bachelors degree taken in Moi University she studied Mathematics and Geography leading to a Bachelor of Education Arts degree. Her  experience  while teaching mathematics in secondary schools for over 15 years inspired her first thesis titled ‘The Role of Peer Instruction in Learners Acquisition of Problem Solving Skills in Mathematics in Selected Secondary Schools in Bungoma District’ this was written in  October 2007. While working as a teacher educator in Kibabii diploma Teacher Training college , she took this further, and ,in 2016,  studied peer mediated strategies in mathematics instruction leading to a thesis titled ‘Peer Instruction and Secondary School Students’ Performance in Vectors in Bungoma County’. She is currently employed at Turkana University College in the department of teacher education where she is involved in the preparation of student teachers who hope to teach mathematics in secondary school. Her current research interests are ‘practical activities in mathematics instruction’. In the course of her career she has prepared candidates who have excelled in national examinations at both secondary and diploma levels for which she has been awarded certificates of recognition. Over time she has participated in seminars, workshops, symposia and other inter school / college activities which have enriched her experience as an educator. As  master trainer, she participated in the national training of teachers in early grade methodologies and drew valuable experience in training of trainers. She has wide experience in handling learners both in and out of class as she joins them in co-curricular activities with a bias in handball and Drama. A strict disciplinarian, she is capable of ensuring learners adherence to rules and regulations while at the same time maintaining cordial relationships that enable her offer career guidance and counseling. She believes in God, enjoys working with the community and is passionate about planting of trees.

  1. The Chair of Department – Social Work and Development Studies

Mr. Logiron is an Assistant Lecturer, School of Education and Social Sciences. He is currently the departmental Chairman of Development Studies and Social Work, at Turkana University College. For a period spanning 10 years, Logiron has been involved in the fields of Academics, Administration, Human Resource Management, Research and Trainings specifically in the fields of household food security, Gender Based Violence, Resource mapping, needs & problem assessments, emergency response, livelihood baseline studies and surveys, early warning systems, environmental assessments and participatory community training. He has been exposed to extensive teaching, research and consultancy assignments in the fields of food security and community training and mobilization. He started off working on anthropological works in his home county of Turkana. This gave him a practical insight into the rural and cultural setting of the poverty stricken and disadvantaged groups in society. In particular Logiron got to understand the traditional/pastoral land tenure and management systems. As a Research Assistant working for the government, he got to know the bureaucratic and structured systems of formal administration, and in particular extension services. In the University system, Logiron is involved in administration, policy formulation, teaching and in-depth research into the fields of Sociology, Politics, Organizational Development, Philosophy, Research Methods and environment. As a consultant, he has been working for various NGOs and UN agencies. He has undertaken evaluation, needs and problem assessments for World Vision International (WVI), Oxfam-GB, SNV-Netherlands, Practical Action (ITDG), Practical Action, Arid Lands Resource Management Project (ARLMP), APAD, UNDP, UNICEF/OLS and UN-WFP, Constituency Development Fund (CDF), GIZ and ICRAF. Mr Logiron is pursuing a PhD in Sociology from Moi University. He is a holder of Master of Arts (Sociology) and Bachelor of Arts (Sociology), Second Class Honors, (Upper Division), Kenyatta University. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource and Development from Africa Centre for Project Management. Logiron is an active member of Turkana Professionals Association, Doctoral association of Eastern Africa, Society of Educational Research and Evaluation, Kenya, Institute of Human Resource Management and Community Development Practitioners of Kenya.

Ms. Abisaki Oloo is a curriculum expert having been in the Education industry for 34 years. Abisaki has taught in high school and is currently an Assistant Lecturer in Turkana University College (a constituent College of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology) where she holds the position of Chair; Department of Teacher Education. Abisaki is at an advanced stage of her Doctor of Philosophy Degree. She is a member of Educational Management Society of Kenya and has undertaken research in the area of curriculum which has culminated into presentations in international conferences and into several publications in renowned peer reviewed journals. Abisaki has also been identified as a blind reviewer for international journals.

Dr. Evelyn Kanus is a lecturer in the Department of Teacher Education, School of Education and Social Sciences at Turkana University College. Dr. Kanus also serves as the Ag.  Director in the Directorate of Research, Partnerships and Collaborations at the university college. She is an active researcher who has published six articles in refereed journals. She has also had a career as a high school teacher spanning over twenty years whereby, she rose from assistant teacher to school principal.  During her stint as school principal, she engaged in active teaching and successfully manning and managing national examinations and is a trained national examiner. Dr. Kanus is holder of a doctorate degree in Educational Psychology, master degree in Guidance and Counselling and a bachelor’s degree in Education. An active member of the Kenya Association of Professional Counsellors (KAPC).

Dr. Benjamin, PhD. Pedagogy (English and Literature) Maseno University, M.PHIL.Educational Communication and Technology (Moi University), is a Lecturer in the department of Teacher Education. Dr. Koross also serves as the Ag. Director in the Directorate of Technical Education and Vocational Trainning (TVET) at the university college.  He has worked with vulnerable groups in marginalized areas. Koross has participated in numerous conferences and trainings held in Moi, Maseno and Laikipia Universities. He is an active researcher who has published articles in refereed journals. Koross has been a Part time Lecturer at Maseno University and Kisii University Eldoret Campus Teaching; Communication Skills, Teaching methods in English, Teaching Literature in English Subject Methods, Research Methods, Socio Linguistics, Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology and Syntax, Gender and Language and Grammatical Analysis and Theories of Second Language Acquisition. Koross has taught at Chepareria Secondary School (TSC) Ortum Boys High School, BOG Teacher, Tulwet Secondary School, Teacher at Kabuyefwe friends Secondary School and St. Teresa Secondary School Sikhendu. He has been an active member of cocurricular activities having served as an Athletics referee at National Level (2013).  He has been an H.O.D of Languages. He has participated in Youth Camp Bukwet AIC Local Church Theme: Promoting youth moral and spiritual growth. Dr. Otieno holds a PhD in Project Planning (Jaramogi Oginga University of Science and Technology). Otieno is a holder of Master of Arts Degree in Project Planning and Management (University of Nairobi). He has 8 years teaching experience in the Department of Development Studies and Social Work. Dr. Otieno also serves as the Ag. Director in the Directorate of Perfomance Contracting and Quality Assuarance at the university college. He is well versed with Youth and gender development. Otieno has 13 years of experience on facilitation and implementation of programmes and activities that promote social, economic and political empowerment for Youth, Women and Persons Living with Disabilities, education for vulnerable school girls and boys, undertaking research on gender issues, and gender based violence and facilitation of formation of community level structure and mobilizing communities to participate in activities promoting gender equity and elimination of FGM and Gender Based Violence. He has published widely and participated in national and international conferences.

Dr. Miriti is a Lecturer in  the School of Education and Social Sciences, department of teacher education. Dr. Miriti holds a Ph.D in English and Linguistics from Chuka University, MA Linguistics from Kenyatta university and a Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree from Kenyatta University. In addition, he holds a Diploma in Human Resource Management from Kenya Institute of  Management. He has a wealth of experience in lecturing English courses and Communication Skills in various Universities in Kenya. Currently, he is a lecturer at Turkana University College and the acting Director, in the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies. Ms. Beatrice Kemunto Charity Obwoge PhD…LLL (UNISA), M.A (UNISA) B.Ed Arts (MMUST)  is an Award Winner of the Best Linguist in African Language Association of  Southern Africa (ALASA) 2016. She is a member and Ambassador of Language Association of East Africa (LAEA) and a member of Creative Writers Association of Kenya (CWAK). She has participated in developing Localized Curriculum for health for Nakuru Municipality funded by ALFRA and Hameelinnan City (2011) Agricultural Engineering in Kenya’s Urban Schools: A Case of Storeyed Gardens in Nakuru Municipality funded by NACOSTI-Kenya (2010-2012). Apart from research, she teaches Communication Skills, Language and Linguistics Courses in Turkana University College. She has presented papers in National as well as International Conferences and published in peer reviewed journals. Her research interests are in Sociolinguistics, Semantics, Morphology and Phonology.

Mr. Lusire Lumumba is an Assistant Lecturer, School of Education and Social Sciences, Department of Development Studies and Social Work, at Turkana University College. He is also currently serving as the Ag. Director of Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL). Mr. Lusire Lumumba has more than six years of multi-university teaching, research and administrative experience in the area of Social Work and Community Development. Mr. Lusire has worked as an Adult, Continuing and Non-formal Education Officer in the Kenya Civil Service. Lusire worked to establish Mahiakalo Community Based Organization to support Vulnerable Children and widows. He is also a founder of The Salvation Army Street Children Rehabilitation Centre in Kakamega town. Lusire was a team leader in founding Ichina Community Learning Resource Centre for functional literacy and skill development and Jamia Centre for Secondary Non-Formal and Adult Continuing Education-Kakamega. Mr Lusire Lumumba is pursuing a PhD in Social Work from Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He is a holder of M.Sc. Disaster Management and Sustainable Development and a First-Class Honors Graduate of Social Work from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. He also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Distinction), of Mount Kenya University. In addition, he holds a Diploma of Social Work and Community Development examined by KNEC. Mr. Lusire was a critical team researcher in a baseline survey and establishment of  Kakamega County Women Empowerment Programme. Mr.Lusire was an instrumental researcher in a consultancy for Public expenditure tracking survey and simplified information on public participation under the Justice and Peace Programme of the Diocese of Lodwar. Lusire has published several articles in refereed journals. He is an active member of International Federation of Social Work-Kenyan Chapter and Association of Social Work Educators of Kenya (ASWEK). Mr. Mwit is an Assistant Lecturer in School of Education and Social Sciences and the department of teacher education where he teaches Literature to the aspiring teachers of English and Literature. He can also handle many areas in communication studies. Mr. Mwiti also serves as the Chairperson of UASU, Turkana University college Chapter. Mwiti is currently a Literature PhD student at the University of Nairobi. He cleared his Masters in Literature at Kenyatta University in the year 2014 where he researched on the poetics of Spoken Word Poetry. He had done Bachelor of Education-Arts (English and Literature) at the same university graduating in the year 2005 with Second Class Honours Upper Division. Mwiti is also an alumnus of Igembe Boys Secondary School where he left a good record in academics and leadership. He is a seasoned actor, scripts writer, director and adjudicator of all the drama festival’s items. He is currently the patron of drama at the university where the inaugural team qualified for the nationals. Due to his love for the drama festivals, he is currently researching on its play scripts for his PhD. Mwiti has taught English and Literature in several secondary schools for 14 years, 11 under TSC. Before his employment at this university college, he had done part-time teaching of Literature in several universities where he handled all the undergraduate Literature units. He is passionate and committed to teaching and research in Literature and the related disciplines. He is also an official in UASU-TUC chapter. He hopes to be a distinguished professor of Literature and a renowned creative writer. He regularly contributes in Saturday Nation newspaper’s Literature, Culture and Arts pages. Mr. Chepkwony currently teaches literature in the department of Teacher Education, School of Education and Social Sciences. He is pursuing his PhD in Literature at Laikipia University, Kenya. He is a holder of Master of Arts in Literature degree from University of Kabianga and a Bachelor of Education (Second Class, Upper Division) degree from Moi University, Eldoret. He has taught literature at the University of Kabianga, Maasai Mara University and Kenya Methodist University on part-time basis for five years. He is a seasoned educationist of repute who has taught English and Literature in high school for many years where he rose to become a principal. To horn his administrative skills, he attended a management course in Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI). He, thus, holds a diploma in Education Management.  In the literary field he majors in; Gothicism, postmodernism, historiography, postcolonial discourse, popular fiction and Diasporic literature, Identity and Sexuality. Not only has he made contributions to various refereed journals but has also made contributions in International Conferences. He mentors a Jua Kali  Youth Group (JUKAG) in Nakuru and Kericho Counties to collectivize their efforts in self reliance. As a thespian, he is a trainer of drama and music. He is an excellent team player and his work ethic includes working with zest, zeal and gusto to achieve desired goals. He is a mentor too with a passion of inducting the youth in good morals and expected behavior. As a result-oriented person, he crafts his niche in the literary world and is desirous of the youth achieving their full potentials.
