Turkana University College Welcomes First- Year Students for the 2024 Academic Year

Turkana University College (TUC), a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, welcomed its newest cohort of first-year students in a ceremony led by Principal Prof. George N. Chemining'wa. The event was held at the university college on 18th September 2024, it marked the official beginning of the 2024 academic year.


In his address, Prof. Chemining'wa extended a warm welcome to the incoming students, celebrating their achievements and emphasizing the importance of both academic excellence and holistic personal development. “You are now part of a supportive and vibrant community,” he remarked, highlighting the unique opportunities the students would experience at Turkana University College. He encouraged them to actively participate in both academic and extracurricular activities, which are essential for their growth and development.

Prof. Chemining'wa reaffirmed TUC’s commitment to its vision of becoming a globally esteemed university in teaching, research, and outreach. He outlined the institution’s mission to generate, preserve, and utilize knowledge through quality teaching, research, and outreach for the advancement of humanity.


The principal emphasized the importance of holistic development, urging students to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and leadership opportunities. These experiences, he said, would shape them into well-rounded individuals and future leaders. 

“We value the sense of community here at TUC,” he added, encouraging the new students to form lasting connections with their peers, faculty, and staff. In light of modern challenges, the Principal provided practical advice on navigating the digital landscape, maintaining mental health, and avoiding the dangers of drug abuse and unhealthy relationships. He urged students to be responsible digital citizens and to seek help when facing academic or personal challenges. TUC remains a drug-free environment, with strict policies in place to support healthy relationships and academic integrity.

Prof. Chemining'wa concluded his address by reminding the students of their roles as future leaders, innovators, and change-makers. He encouraged them to use their education to make a positive impact on the world, while also participating in the university’s tree-planting initiative, which aligns with the national program to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.


The Deputy Principal Administration Finance and Planning outlined the university’s core values, which include Customer Focus, Sustainability, Excellence, Integrity and Teamwork. He reassured students of the high-quality education they would receive at TUC, led by experienced academic staff. He encouraged the students to take full advantage of the university’s learning resources, such as the library, research facilities, and internship programs, and to engage deeply in their studies.
