Turkana University College recently held its first research conference. The conference dubbed   “1^st Virtual Multidisciplinary Conference” took place on 24^th and 25^th June, 2021. The event itself is historic since it’s the first in the history of Turkana University College.

The theme of the conference was “Science, Technology, Education and Business for Sustainable Development in the Wake of Covid-19 Pandemic.”

Also discussed were various sub-themes and cross cutting issues.

The conference was officially inaugurated by the Ag. Principal Prof. George N. Chemining’wa.

Prof. Chemining’wa noted that the virtual conference came at a time when Kenya, and indeed the whole world is grappling with the negative effects occasioned by the novel virus Corona virus disease. Thus the conference provided an opportunity for researchers to exchange research findings from various academic fields amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic. He reiterated that researchers have the responsibility to generate and disseminate new knowledge to be used to transform the society and for attaining sustainable development.

The climax of the conference was the Keynote address that was made by Prof. Njoki Wane who delivered a powerful and insightful speech onIndigenous Education as a decolonizing and transformational tool. “The absence of indigenous ways of knowing denies the African child’s mind the essential tools for the development of thoughts, emotions, personality and interpretation of reality,” said Prof. Njoki Wane.

 Amongst those who participated in this very academically interactive virtual conference were staff and students from Turkana University College and international researchers from India and Tanzania.
