On October 9th, 2024, Turkana University College’s Counselling Department hosted a Peer Counsellors (PC V) Certificate Award Ceremony in the Seminar Room. This event celebrated the successful graduation and certification of peer counsellors.

The Peer Counsellor Certificate equips students with critical skills in Basic Counselling Skills I & II, enabling them to provide effective peer support and contribute positively to the mental health and well-being of the student body.

Prof. George N. Chemining’wa, Principal of Turkana University College, presented the certificates to the graduating peer counsellors. Other members of staff in attendance included Rev. Jackson Iruko, Dean of Students, and Mr. Moses Mwai, the Students’ Counsellor, who have been instrumental in guiding and supporting the counselling program.

This certification program is part of TUC’s ongoing efforts to foster a compassionate and supportive campus environment. It empowers students with the knowledge and tools necessary to assist their peers, thereby strengthening the college’s commitment to student well-being and mental health awareness.

Certified peer counsellors are trained to offer crucial support to their fellow students, helping to address common issues such as stress, anxiety, and academic challenges. The program also promotes mental health awareness across the campus, encouraging a culture of openness and support. In addition, Peer counsellors develop essential leadership skills, empathy, and communication abilities, making them role models within the student community.

By equipping students with these valuable skills, Turkana University College continues to be at the forefront of nurturing an inclusive and empathetic academic environment.
