The workshop’s primary objective was to empower faculty and researchers with the sophisticated tools needed to navigate the competitive world of high-impact publishing. By focusing on enhancing research capacity and visibility, the session aimed to ensure that the unique insights generated at TUC reach a global audience. The highlight of the day was a guest lecture by Prof. Michael Lokuruka, who offered a masterclass in modern academic excellence.
Prof. Lokuruka’s lecture bridged the gap between institutional growth and regional stewardship. He first addressed the evolving nature of research, supervision, and thesis examination in the 21st century, providing invaluable strategies for navigating contemporary academic challenges and maintaining rigorous standards in postgraduate mentorship. This was followed by a deeply resonant session on the sustainability of Lake Turkana as a vital resource in the region.
As this topic aligns closely with the theme of this year’s university conference, it struck a powerful chord with the audience. Prof. Lokuruka’s insights into the ecological and economic importance of the lake inspired a collective resolution among the researchers present to play a more active role in advocating for its sustainable use. The day concluded not just with new knowledge, but with a renewed sense of purpose.
By connecting global publishing standards with local environmental priorities, Turkana University College is successfully carving out a space where academic rigor meets community transformation. This workshop serves as a testament to TUC's growing influence as a center for impactful research that is truly "close to the hearts" of the people it serves.
