Turkana University College marks World Cancer Day 2025

Turkana University College participated in commemorating World Cancer Day 2025, held annually on February 4th to raise awareness, improve education, and inspire action to reduce the global cancer burden. The annual event unites various stakeholders to promote prevention, early detection, and equitable treatment, with a focus on addressing disparities in cancer care worldwide.

This year’s national World Cancer Day celebration took place at Moi Gardens in Lodwar, Turkana County, under the theme “United by Unique.” The event was led by the National Cancer Institute of Kenya (NCI-K) and brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including government representatives (national and county government), healthcare professionals, NGOs, educational institutions, and local communities. The theme underscores the challenges faced by underserved populations and promotes people-centered cancer care.

Cancer remains a significant public health challenge in Kenya, with 44,726 new cases and 29,938 cancer-related deaths reported in 2022. The most prevalent cancers include breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancer. The country’s cancer burden is mainly driven by late-stage cancer diagnosis, limited access to healthcare, and systemic gaps within the health sector. By engaging the community and highlighting the specific challenges faced by marginalized regions like Turkana County, the event aims to foster meaningful change toward a more inclusive and effective healthcare system for cancer prevention and treatment.

Turkana University College staff and students actively participated in various initiatives to increase cancer awareness. These included educational outreach, the distribution of cancer-related materials, and raising awareness about the importance of screening for breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers. Additionally, TUC students delivered an engaging and informative entertainment performance during the ceremony. The university's participation in World Cancer Day 2025 demonstrates its commitment to community service and the promotion of health and well-being in the local community.
