In addition to these achievements, Turkana University College recently hosted the Work Package 5 (WP5) Workshop on Community and Industry Embedding under the 3iS Project. The four-day workshop brought together local and international partners to explore best practices in University Community Engagement, strengthen institutional strategies, and enhance experiential learning through field visits within Turkana County. This event further underscored TUC’s commitment to integrating community-centered approaches into higher education. The 3is Project Closing Ceremony was held at the University of Gondar from 6-7 November 2025, bringing together project partners, faculty, and key stakeholders to celebrate the successful culmination of the three-year initiative. The event highlighted the project’s achievements in enhancing impactful, inclusive, and integrated higher education across Eastern Africa. Participants reflected on the milestones reached, shared lessons learned, and discussed opportunities for sustaining the project’s outcomes beyond its formal completion. The ceremony also underscored the strong collaboration among partner institutions and reaffirmed their commitment to continued regional cooperation in advancing transformative education.

The 3is Project is a transformative regional initiative strengthening higher education systems across Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Europe. Through collaborative teaching innovations, institutional capacity building, and community-centered approaches, the project works to make higher education more responsive, equitable, and relevant to local and regional development needs.

Over its implementation period, the 3is project has achieved remarkable milestones. It has facilitated networks and collaborations between higher education institutions to formalize long-term academic partnerships; supported over 20 staff mobilities through Erasmus+ programmes, enhancing cross-border learning and knowledge exchange; and generated multiple joint research proposals and institutional frameworks inspired by 3is methodologies. The project has also strengthened community engagement practices by documenting the cultural, social and economic realities of target communities, highlighting contemporary gaps and marginalization, and emphasizing the importance of integrating indigenous epistemologies into modern higher education systems.

As a forward-looking legacy of the project, the Ateker Futures Cross-Border University Network (AFCUN) has emerged as a key future endeavor. AFCUN seeks to sustain and expand the collaborative spirit of 3is by bringing together universities across the Ateker region to promote joint research, student and staff exchanges, curriculum co-creation, and community-driven innovations. The network aims to deepen regional integration, elevate indigenous knowledge systems, and empower borderland communities through inclusive higher education pathways. AFCUN represents the next phase in building a resilient, interconnected, and culturally grounded higher education ecosystem in Eastern Africa.
