Turkana University College (TUC) is pleased to announce the official appointment of Professor Hellen Wangechi Mwaura Kamiri as the new substantive Deputy Principal in charge of Academic and Student Affairs (DP-ASA). The handover ceremony was held on 11th June 2025, in the presence of the Principal, Professor George Chemining’wa, and other members of staff, marking a significant leadership transition within the university’s top management.
Professor Kamiri brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the institution. She is an Associate Professor of Soil and Land Use Interactions and holds a PhD in Agricultural Sciences (Soil Science) from the University of Bonn, Germany. Prior to joining TUC, she served in several academic and administrative capacities at Karatina University, including Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs) and Dean, School of Agriculture and Biotechnology.
Her leadership comes at a pivotal time as the university intensifies its focus on academic excellence, innovative research, and community engagement. Prof. Kamiri’s research expertise spans over 19 years and includes soil management in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, climate-smart agriculture, and sustainable land use areas particularly relevant to Turkana’s ecological and development context.
Her experience in internationally funded projects, postgraduate supervision, and applied research further aligns with TUC’s mission to generate knowledge that drives local and national development.
The outgoing Ag. Deputy Principal – Academic and Student Affairs, Professor Peter Edome Akwee, expressed deep humility and honour as he formally handed over the role to Professor Hellen W. Mwaura Kamiri. He called upon members to extend their full support to her as she assumes the new role.
