Turkana University College Hosts 3is Project Innovative Teaching Methods Training

Turkana University College successfully hosted a sensitization meeting on innovative teaching methods under the 3IS (Impactful, Inclusive, Integrated Higher Education in East Africa) Project. The training, held on February 20, 2025, brought together teaching staff from various departments to explore modern teaching strategies aimed at enhancing education delivery.

The 3is project entails a Consortium of Kenyan, Ethiopian, Somalian, Spain and Greece Universities that aims to strengthen Higher Education in remote Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya through an innovative capacity-building approach. The project empowers participating African Universities to design impactful policy instruments and action plans, focusing on internationalization, inclusiveness, educational innovations, academic excellence, community and industry outreach and regional integration.

Facilitated by members of the 3IS Project led by Prof. George Muthaa, Prof. Peter Edome and Dr. Miriti Gervasio, the interactive session covered a range of innovative methodologies, including active learning, problem-based learning, flipped classrooms, and project-based learning. Participants engaged in discussions on the benefits of these techniques and shared insights on overcoming challenges in implementation.

Key takeaways from the training emphasized the importance of integrating technology in teaching, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and addressing institutional challenges to adopting innovative methods. The 3IS Project team reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Turkana University College in advancing modern education practices.

The training marks a significant step towards improving teaching effectiveness and student engagement at the university. More capacity-building initiatives are expected in the future to ensure the sustained adoption of innovative teaching methodologies.
