Principal’s Address to First Year Students – September 8, 2025
Turkana University College (TUC) proudly welcomed thousands of new students during a colorful matriculation ceremony held at the Library Grounds to officially usher in the Class of 2025.
The event began with a procession of academic staff led by the Principal, Prof. George N. Chemining’wa, followed by the introduction of all members of staff present. The Deputy Principal, Prof. Hellen Wangechi-Kamiri, congratulated the first-year students for securing admission to the institution and thanked the members of staff who had planned and successfully conducted the orientation exercise. She further confirmed that orientation had been completed effectively in all departments before inviting the principal to make his speech.
Before addressing the students, Prof. Chemining’wa introduced Prof. John Oluoch, KUCCPS Director for Placement and Career Development, together with his team. Prof. Oluoch assured the students that they had been placed in the right institution and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunities available at TUC. Guests and students were then entertained by lively performances from various student groups, showcasing the vibrant student life at the University.
In his address, Prof. Chemining’wa congratulated the new students on their admission, describing them as the largest intake in TUC’s history. He emphasized that university life is a journey of personal growth, responsibility, and making a positive impact on society. “You are the author of your own life… Keep your eye on your pen,” he reminded them.
The Principal outlined TUC’s vision of becoming a globally esteemed institution in teaching, research, and outreach, and called on students to embrace the University’s core values of customer service, sustainability, excellence, integrity, and teamwork. He encouraged them to pursue academic excellence, prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution by engaging with technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and data analytics, and to be responsible digital citizens.
On health and wellbeing, he advised students to protect themselves from HIV and AIDS, avoid drugs and substance abuse, and seek counselling when needed. He underscored the importance of integrity, warning against examination malpractice and highlighting the University’s zero-tolerance policy on lecturer–student relationships.
Prof. Chemining’wa also reminded students that university life goes beyond academics. He encouraged them to actively engage in sports, cultural events, clubs, and volunteer work, noting that extracurricular activities are “integral to producing a well-rounded graduate.” He further urged them to embrace global citizenship and sustainability by respecting diversity and participating in environmental conservation efforts such as tree planting and waste reduction.
The Principal concluded by calling on the Class of 2025 to seize the opportunities available at TUC and to make their time at the University one of growth, discovery, and lasting contribution to society.
