TUC Partners with Turkana County Government in Book Harvesting Campaign for Literacy and Digital Inclusion

Turkana University College (TUC) joined hands with the Turkana County Government in a noble initiative to promote literacy and digital inclusion through a Book Harvesting Campaign held on September 8, 2025, at the County Library, Museum Grounds.

The campaign is part of the University’s core mandate of community outreach, and researchers and academicians were called upon to support the drive either in cash or in kind. Through the Directorate of Research, Partnerships, and Collaborations, led by Dr. Miriti Gervasio, TUC contributed eighty-four books, including twelve encyclopedias and seventy-two graded readers.

The County Chief Officer Department of Education and Social Protection, Turkana County, Paul Ekeno, expressed his gratitude for the University’s support, noting the positive impact of such efforts in addressing the county’s high illiteracy rate, currently estimated at eighty-two percent.

In addition to this year’s contribution, last year Dr. Miriti Gervasio and Dr. Susan Ouko from Turkana University College, together with Dr. Benard Mudogo from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), donated one thousand, one hundred books through grant funding from the Extensive Reading Foundation. These sustained contributions underscore the ongoing commitment to transforming education and improving literacy outcomes in Turkana.

The campaign reaffirmed the importance of partnership between academia and government in tackling social challenges. TUC encourages all staff, researchers, and partners to continue supporting this initiative and playing an active role in alleviating illiteracy in Turkana County.
