Turkana University College Joins Mazingira Day 2025: Championing Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship

In alignment with the theme "Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship," Turkana University College proudly joined the Mazingira Day 2025 celebrations on 10th October at the StartUp Lions ICT Campus in Loropio. This collaborative initiative, organized in partnership with StartUp Lions, and KEFRI-Lodwar, underscored the urgent call for collective environmental action grounded in community engagement and institutional responsibility.

The highlight of the event was a large-scale tree planting exercise, symbolizing a united commitment to ecological restoration and climate resilience. Over 300 trees were planted, representing a meaningful stride towards environmental sustainability within the Turkana region. This act of green advocacy reflected the core message of the day that environmental stewardship must be citizen-driven, inclusive, and rooted in local action.

A particularly inspiring element was the active involvement of students from Loropio Wakanda Girls High School, whose enthusiasm and eco-conscious spirit energized the event. The participation of the school's Principal further emphasized the pivotal role of educational institutions in cultivating environmental awareness and fostering a generation of responsible, climate-aware citizens.

Throughout the day, engaging knowledge-sharing sessions were facilitated by experts from KEFRI and Turkana University College. Discussions centred on the vital intersections of scientific research, sustainability, and youth-led climate action, providing a platform for students to explore how innovation and local knowledge can drive transformative environmental solutions.

This collaborative effort reflected not only a ceremonial observance but a strategic investment in long-term ecological wellbeing. By empowering youth, mobilizing communities, and integrating academic expertise, the event embodied a dynamic model of citizen-centric environmental stewardship.

Turkana University College extends its sincere appreciation to StartUps Lions for their gracious invitation and coordination, and to KEFRI for their generous contribution of diverse fruit tree seedlings. These partnerships are instrumental in greening our landscapes and deepening our collective resolve to protect the environment for future generations.
