The Guidance and Counselling Department of Turkana University College held the PC VII & VIII Peer Counsellors Certificate Award Ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen student support and promote holistic wellbeing. The event recognized students who successfully completed the Student Peer Counsellors (SPC) training programme, a comprehensive initiative designed to equip learners with essential competencies in basic psychological support, active listening, mental health awareness, and referral procedures.

The ceremony was presided over by the Principal, Prof. George N. Chemining’wa, who commended the new peer counsellors for their dedication, discipline, and exceptional resilience throughout the training process. He appreciated the students for their commitment to balancing academic responsibilities with the rigorous demands of the programme and emphasized the pivotal role peer counsellors play in enhancing the University’s counselling framework and contributing to a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the taking of the Counsellors’ Oath, through which the new counsellors pledged to uphold ethical practice, maintain confidentiality, and offer compassionate and responsible support to their peers. By joining the peer counselling team, the trainees assume an important responsibility in providing first-level psychosocial assistance and ensuring timely referral of sensitive cases to professional counsellors.

The Head of the Guidance and Counselling Department applauded the graduates for their accomplishments and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to expanding mental health support services. This includes ongoing peer-support programmes, wellness awareness initiatives, and continuous capacity-building for both students and staff.

Turkana University College remains steadfast in its mission to nurture student leadership, foster emotional resilience, and promote the overall wellbeing of the University community.

Congratulations to all the newly commissioned Peer Counsellors (PC VII & VIII)!
