
Turkana University College (TUC) Student Showcases AI-Powered MediBot at the 17th Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) Annual Meeting and Conference

Turkana University College (TUC) Student AI Innovation Impresses East African Education Leaders during the 17th Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) Annual Meeting and Conference: “MediBot showcased at the prestigious IUCEA Conference as university leaders champion AI, innovation, and regional collaboration”.
A student from Turkana University College has captured regional attention after presenting an artificial intelligence-powered healthcare innovation at one of East Africa's most influential higher education conferences. Dennis Gunjiri, a student innovator at Turkana University College, showcased "MediBot AI-Powered Clinical Triage and Patient Engagement Assistant" during the 17th Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) Annual Meeting and Conference, held from 29–31 July 2026 at the Argyle Grand Hotel in Nairobi.
The conference brought together university vice-chancellors, government officials, researchers, innovators, development partners, and education stakeholders from across East Africa to discuss the future of higher education under the theme, "Powering the Future of Higher Education in East Africa through Strategic Partnerships and Collaborations."
One of the highlights of the exhibition was the visit by Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala, CBS, Principal Secretary in Kenya's State Department for Higher Education, accompanied by Prof. Rose Nanyonga, Chairperson of the IUCEA Executive Committee. The delegation toured the Turkana University College exhibition stand, where Dennis demonstrated how MediBot uses Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Large Language Models (LLMs) to provide real-time clinical triage, patient engagement, and health guidance. The visitors were welcomed by Prof. George N. Chemining'wa, Principal of Turkana University College, and Prof. Peter A. Edome, Deputy Principal in Charge of Research, Innovation and Linkages.
Developed to improve healthcare access in remote and underserved communities, MediBot is expected to play an important role in addressing healthcare challenges in Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), particularly Turkana County. By offering timely health information and clinical guidance, the innovation seeks to complement existing healthcare services and improve patient outcomes.
Dennis's latest achievement follows another major success earlier this year when MediBot won First Position in the Emerging Technologies and Innovation Category during the 1st Kisii University Research and Innovation Week in April 2026, earning recognition as one of Kenya's promising student innovations. The project was developed under the mentorship of Dr. Jeremiah Onunga Osida, Head of the Department of Renewable Energy and Technology, whose mentorship has supported the growth of student-led innovation at Turkana University College.
The IUCEA conference also marked the launch of the IUCEA Strategy, the AI Network of Universities, and the IUCEA Strategic Plan (2026–2031), reflecting the region's commitment to embracing artificial intelligence, strengthening research collaboration, and enhancing the global competitiveness of East African universities.
Addressing delegates during the opening ceremony, Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala emphasized that partnerships, innovation, and digital transformation are central to building resilient universities capable of producing graduates equipped to meet the demands of the twenty-first-century economy.
