Turkana University College Hosts 6th International Multi-Disciplinary Research Conference 


The 6th International Multidisciplinary Research Conference, held at Turkana University College from 10th to 12th, 2026, was a resounding success. The three-day conference brought together researchers, scholars, policymakers, development partners, industry leaders, and academics from local and international institutions. Themed: "Harnessing Locally Led Innovation for Climate Resilience and Sustainable Peace in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs)," provided a unique platform for sharing knowledge, showcasing research, innovations and strengthening collaborations that address the challenges facing ASAL communities.

The conference was officially inaugurated by the Principal of Turkana University College, Prof. George Chemining'wa, who welcomed the participants and underscored the institution's commitment to research excellence, innovation, and community engagement. He noted that universities play a critical role in generating knowledge and practical solutions that respond to emerging global and local challenges while contributing to sustainable development.


The highlight of the opening ceremony was the keynote address delivered by the Chief Guest, Prof. Emeritus Ratemo W. Michieka, Chancellor of Tharaka University.

In his address, he underscored the importance of research, innovation, collaboration, and higher education in developing sustainable solutions to climate change, promoting peace, and accelerating socio-economic transformation. He challenged researchers to produce evidence-based solutions that directly improve communities and support sustainable development.


The conference also featured distinguished keynote speakers who participated both physically and virtually. On the second day, participants received a virtual keynote address from Prof. Chinedum Uzoma Nwajiubu of Nigeria, who spoke on the importance of African-led research, innovation, and regional collaboration in accelerating sustainable development across the continent. Participants also received an inspiring keynote address by Mr. Mark R. Ogendi, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Utalii College. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of collaboration among universities, industry, government, and development partners in advancing research and innovation. He encouraged institutions to strengthen partnerships, share knowledge, and translate research into practical solutions that address community needs, promote climate resilience, and contribute to sustainable development.


This year's conference attracted an impressive 147 research abstracts, reflecting the growing recognition of Turkana University College as a hub for research excellence. Throughout the three-day event, researchers presented their findings through paper presentations, panel discussions, and networking sessions, fostering knowledge exchange, meaningful dialogue, and collaborative partnerships aimed at developing innovative solutions for the challenges facing Arid and Semi-Arid Lands.

As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship, Turkana University College organized a tree-planting exercise, where participants joined the university leadership in promoting environmental conservation and demonstrating the importance of translating research into practical climate action.

Throughout the three-day event, delegates praised Turkana University College for its warm hospitality, excellent organization, and conducive learning environment. The keynote speakers, presenters, and participants commended the College for successfully hosting an international conference that promoted meaningful dialogue, academic excellence, and collaborative research.


The successful hosting of the 6th International Research Conference further cements Turkana University College's reputation as an emerging Centre of research and innovation. By bringing together diverse voices and attracting 147 research abstracts, the conference demonstrated the transformative role of research in addressing societal challenges and advancing sustainable development.


The final day of the conference included a field visit to Eliye(Lake Turkana), giving participants an opportunity to experience the unique environment of the ASAL region and gain practical insights into community-based development initiatives. The conference concluded with the official closing ceremony, marking the successful end of three days of knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation.
