Turkana University College was established on 27th January, 2017 by Legal Notice No. 8 of 2017 as provided for in the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012 as a constituent College of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). The University College was inaugurated by His Excellency and Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, Honourable Dr. William Samoei Ruto.
The University College was established with the aim of providing holistic education in humanities, science and technology for the development and management of the unexploited natural resources in Turkana County and the nation at large. It also aims at creating, preserving and disseminating knowledge and skills through teaching, research and outreach for the advancement of humanity.
Turkana University College is Kenya’s first Public University to be established in the vast resource-rich area of north western Kenya. The University College is located in Turkana County, the second largest county in Kenya covering 68,680 km², bordering South Sudan to the north-west, Uganda to the west and Ethiopia to the north.

The University Strategic Plan 2021–2025 addresses six strategic issues: university teaching and learning; research, innovation and outreach; information, communication and technology; student services; resource mobilization and management; and institutional transformation.
