Turkana University College (TUC) welcomed its newest cohort of first-year students, who reported for admission on 31st August 2026, marking the official beginning of the 2026/2027 academic year. Their arrival was followed by an orientation Programme aimed at helping them settle into university life and familiarize themselves with the university’s academic, social and support systems. The students were formally welcomed in a colourful matriculation ceremony led by Principal Prof. George Chemining’wa on 4th September 2026.

In his address to the new cohort, Prof. Chemining’wa congratulated the students, telling them they had made the right choice in joining Turkana University College. He called on them to embrace diligence, discipline and intellectual curiosity as they begin their academic journey and urged them to align their individual efforts with the university’s strategic vision.
“Turkana University College is not merely a place of learning, it is a vibrant community that nurtures growth, friendships and personal development,” he said.
Prof. Chemining’wa reaffirmed the university’s identity as “The Cradle of Knowledge,” touching on its vision, mission and core values, and urged students to commit themselves to innovation and entrepreneurship as they pursue their studies. He also encouraged them to embrace diversity and inclusivity as part of campus life, and to take hold of the opportunities that would unfold before them during their time at the university. He reaffirmed TUC’s commitment to its vision of becoming a globally esteemed University in teaching, research, and outreach, outlining the institution’s mission to generate, preserve, and utilize and disseminate quality knowledge for advancement of humanity.
Prof. Chemining’wa concluded his address by reminding the students of their roles as future leaders, innovators, and change-makers. He encouraged them to use their education to make a positive impact on the world, while also participating in the university’s tree-planting initiative, which aligns with the national Programme to plant 15 billion trees by 2032. He also urged students to prioritize their wellbeing and steer clear of drug and substance abuse.
The ceremony was further elevated by performances from Turkana University College’s own students, fresh from their triumph at the 98th Kenya National Music Festival, where they secured three trophies across various competitive categories. The trophies were presented to the Principal, drawing warm applause and underscoring the College’s excellence beyond the classroom. Students who took part in the festival were also awarded certificates of participation in recognition of their talent and dedication.
Ahead of the Principal’s address, Deputy Principals Prof. Hellen Wangechi (Academics and Students’ Affairs) and Prof. Peter Edome (Research, Innovation & Linkages) addressed the new students and staff. Prof. Wangechi congratulated the incoming students and emphasized that integrity is key as they begin their time at the university.
Prof. Edome also urged the first-years to respect themselves, their fellow students, and staff, and to work hard and guard both their future and their academic journey.
“You have a dream, and the dream is you,” he told the students.
